New Blood In…Same Faulty Blood Type

Robert Gates was sworn in today as the New Secretary of Defense. While the President had Cheney lead the swearing in, Bush was the only person in the adminitration (perhaps other than Snow Job) able to say with a straight face,

“Bob Gates is a talented and innovative leader who brings fresh perspective to the Department of Defense.”

The White House has one rusty Rolodex that is from before the era of the personal computer. What exemplary list does Gates join? Who else has W. asked…err begged…from his father’s Christmas Party to come fix his messes? Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, James Baker, Paul Bremer, Colin Powell, Ben Scowcroft, Condi Rice, Stephen Hadley et al? Who is next, James Watt? You cannot be innovative, you cannot be fresh, you cannot have new perspective (you could have old perspective) when you have come out of cryo-freezing and possess a scare’em Cold War mindset. The Rumsfeld legacy will not be over, the same mistakes WILL be repeated, so long as “new blood” means only a new face and not new ideas.

What kind of fresh perspective can Mr. Gates, the former President of Texas A&M University (and current Eagle Scout President!) give? Hmm…i dunno, seeing as how his most notable leadership since 1993 is being at A&M when students were killed building a bondfire.

Gates said he hoped to travel to Iraq “quite soon.” Dip his toe in the water so to speak. I wonder if he’ll leave the Green zone? Odds aren’t good.

Agreed. Talk about rearranging chairs on a ship that’s going down….. How about bringing in a democrat or two for consultation? Every other president in a time of national crisis sought meaningful advice from both parties. Would it be so terrible to do that now?
